5th March - Godstone
Mid Surrey Farmers Draghounds

Next meeting

Racing resumes at Godstone on Sunday where a healthy 88 entries are down to contest six races.
The meeting kicks off with a competitive Club Members race that features several in form horses. Rose Grissell has three entered including the consistent De Clare Man, Wor Rom and Crack Of Thunder who finished a close third in the Mens Open at Charing. Horizontal Speed dead heated in the Club Members race there and he is entered again here, while Excitable Island and Minerfortyniner are two quality horses who both have impressive course form.
Horizontal Speed is also entered in the Novice Riders and he could come up against Tim Underwood’s Tempelpirate. The ten-year-old has won 14 of his 17 point-to-point starts, but he was beaten into second at Badbury Rings last weekend. Probably George was second to the useful Vedettariat at Charing and this could be an easier race, while Letskeepit Simple is entered after his easy win in the Restricted at Charing.
The Mixed Open includes both of the Charing Open winners, Murrayana and Vedettariatt, these two look well ahead on ratings but Loch Ba was second last time out and is an interesting entry.  Minerfortyniner is also entered here and doesn’t have to carry a penalty.
The 2m4f Restricted looks more competitive than the Charing one and has a few horses that won last time out. One of those horses is Surging Seas who provided Phil Hall with his final winner at Charing, this time Charlie Marshall is jocked up to ride. Phil York’s Intercooler Turbo won at Cottenham last time, while the five-year-old Welsh’s Castle won for David Kemp. Ballybrack Dancer is another who won last time out, but that was almost two years ago.
The Maiden has two horses who are aiming to go one better than their last runs, Brogeen Boy and Florabell, while Rainbow Stripes and Hidden Drifter were both third at Charing. Stars Royale was clear when falling at Charing and he is entered again here.
The concluding Members Conditions has just five entries, but one of those is the useful Little Legend who ran well without winning last season. This should be a good chance for him with Charlie Marshall riding for the first time. His biggest threat could be Iheardu, who won at Charing last season but pulled up in three subsequent runs.

In contrast to the balmy Charing it was a day for the dedicated(/insane) at Godstone on Sunday, as heavy rain and hailstorm showers battered the crowd and participants throughout the day. The meeting began with the club members conditions race, which last year saw Minerfortyniner pulverise Excitable Island. This year the former was not present, and the latter was able to go one better for regular South East raider Nigel Padfield and jockey Jack Andrews. The novice and veteran riders was competitive on paper and became even more so when the favourite, Charing winner Horizontal Speed, unshipped Gareth Henderson at the open ditch the first time. Last years winner, Mazuri Cowboy, led them home over the final three fences, hitting at least two of them to send his rider Jennifer Harbison clinging onto his neck. The partnership remained intact, however, and Mazuri Cowboy was still able to finish strongly while those who gave chase wilted. The mixed open had just four runners and four time course winner Minerfortyniner was sent off the odds on favourite. He made hard work of it when sent to win by his owner-rider David Maxwell, and Rose Grissell's Crack Of Thunder was closing late on under Oz Wedmore. The Restricted race gave owner-trainer Nigel Padfield and Jack Andrews a second winner of the day, as new recruit King Willie stayed on strongly to beat the favourite Welsh's Castle. The Open Maiden changed complexion over the final circuit, with Brogeen Boy, Stars Royale and Canyouhearmenow all falling at the open ditch when in contention. This left Fizzlestix the task of just having to jump the fences to win, which he did without too much hassle to win by a fence for the in-form Shane Roche and trainer Petra New. The final race of the day saw the local legend Little Legend sent off as the odds on favourite to beat his two rivals, but he had to give way to the younger legs of Always A Chance, who had been produced to perfection for Tabitha Worsley.
